Black Hills National Forest
Black Hills National Forest (Mt. Rushmore and Crazy Horse Memorial)
Located about an hour’s drive west of the Badlands lies the Black Hills National Forest, and there you will find four of the biggest busts of U.S. Presidents that ever existed – Mount Rushmore. In addition to viewing the mountain, there are plenty of other activities to keep you busy on your visit. There’s camping, hiking, and dining options both inside and outside the park.
Also within the Black Hills, less than a half hour’s drive from Mount Rushmore, you’ll find another colossal mountain carving. It’s the massive mountain sculpture of Crazy Horse, the Native American leader of the Lakota people and leader at the Battle of the Little Bighorn, commonly referred to as “Custer’s Last Stand.” Begun in 1948 and still a work in progress, the carving is set to be taller than the Washington Monument and well over two football fields wide. There are also numerous activities available to fill the day, including the Laughing Water Restaurant, where you’ll be treated to a spectacular view of the mountain carving, as well as some of the area’s best cuisine.
