There are very few areas of the country that can provide the kind of diversity you can experience on a trip up or down the Pacific coast. Starting in the north you leave a temperate and almost marine-like atmosphere and end up in southern California with dry, airy conditions more like those of a desert.

It’s the longest and best-known hiking trail in the United States. So, if you haven’t already set foot on the Appalachian Trail and taken in all it has to offer, this trip most definitely belongs on your bucket list. Stretching all the way down from Maine into Dixie, there’s no way you’re going to actually WALK this trail in anything less than several weeks, but with a family with a car, that’s another story. You can not only pop on and off roads that run parallel to the actual trail, but also stray from its path from one side to the other, and give yourself the opportunity to see some of the most unusual, historic, and bucket-listy offerings this nation has to offer.
