Meet Melissa and Lucas Lahr

The Lahr Family spent the last eight years traveling through North America and all of the lower 48 states in a Heartland Torque toy hauler.  They have recently branched out to explore the world and use their RV as a home base in the States.  When they come "home" they have the freedom of their home on wheels and the ability to escape into remote, wild landscapes together.

  • How would you best describe your travel/camping style?

We are slow-traveling nomads who love to immerse ourselves in the world while using our RV as a home base.  We would describe our travel style as slow, nature-focused, and educational. We try to go with the flow because attempting to plan every detail can lead to unmet expectations, especially when traveling with kids and unexpected issues that appear on the road.

  • What is something that always lifts your spirits?

When we are hiking and exploring a new-to-us and empty trail, we are at our best.  The kids love mountain streams to play in, slot canyons to explore, and rocks to climb while the adults love a beautiful view.  It’s the free experiences that we find the most uplifting.

  • What is your preferred type of camping (ie RV park, boondocking, state park, etc), and why?

We primarily boondock on BLM and national forest land because it gets us the closest to nature while still being able to bring our home on wheels with us. We sometimes spend time in RV parks that have a pool for the kids and full hookups to thoroughly clean the RV. Ultimately we love the freedom and natural beauty that boondocking allows.

  • What is your favorite piece of advice you’ve ever given or received on the road?

Don’t move too fast and always have an emergency fund for roadside issues.  These two items will take care of most issues or any hesitancy.  It’s better to feel and experience a few places than to travel to them all just to check off the boxes.  When you are stuck on the side of the road with an unexpected engine or an RV issue, you don’t want the added stress of not being able to financially and emotionally handle that. Trust us, we’ve been there.

  • In a couple of sentences, what is your travel philosophy?

Our philosophy is to “just go for it” because life is too short. As parents of kids of all ages, we are keenly aware of how short childhood is and how important our time together is. We are traveling to get out into nature as a family and explore the diverse, natural wonders and landscapes that our world has to offer while educating our kids in a hands-on way.  I can’t imagine a better education for them and life for us.
