Why We RV with Kids

With the Laird Family
Moms reading to their triplet girls at night.

Jen and Rachel Laird RV long-term with their triplet daughters, Adda, Jesse and Sloane. Like many families, in their stationary life, they were always seeking ways to spend more time together as a family. Now they road school their three daughters, using their travels to help inform their learning, and enjoying all the in-between moments together that become the basis for lifelong memories.

What made you start RVing?

I think the transition from the traditional life to traveling long-term in an RV as a family was a multistep process. Long before kids, I was really interested in tiny living. Then when the girls came along, we had the thought of, “Wouldn't it be so cool if we could travel to places we're learning about?” It was planning vacations around work schedules to make that happen.

What surprised you about the RV lifestyle?

I think one of the big things about RV life that surprised me was the community aspect of it. Because you kind of feel like when you're setting off in an RV that you're kind of your own. But in campgrounds, everyone is so helpful. There's not a lot of judgment. You want to help someone that's struggling maybe in a sense that you have before. Everyone gets along and connects because of that same passion for being outside and camping and traveling.

What do you look for in a travel destination?

As a family that travels with three young girls, there are a few things that we look for. Part of it is schooling. We really want to find things that are educational. Nature is a great classroom for kids.

What advice would you give to a new RVer?

I would say for anyone that hasn't tried RVing or is scared to try it, to do it scared. Just go and give it a try. I think you'll surprise yourself.
