10 Tips for Camping at a NASCAR Race

A row of RVs at the NASCAR race.

I’m a diehard sports guy, but my wife isn’t—yet as newcomers to the racing world, we both agree there’s nothing quite like RVing at a NASCAR weekend. And this comes from someone who’s done plenty of football tailgates! Camping at a NASCAR race combines the thrill of motorsports with the comforts of RV living. We experienced it firsthand at the 2024 Roval race at Charlotte Motor Speedway, and it was everything we hoped for—and more.

From pre-race festivities to post-race fun, the weekend was packed with excitement, belly laughs, and memories we’ll treasure. We rode along with NASCAR legend Bobby Labonte, I survived a turn on a mechanical bull, we caught live concerts, and even had an RV tech swing by our site to fix a slide issue. That’s why we think every RVer should experience it at least once.

Now that we’ve got you thinking about RV camping at a NASCAR event, here are our best tips to make the most of your race weekend!

10 Tips for Camping at a NASCAR Race

  1. Plan Ahead and Book Early

If we learned one thing, it’s that NASCAR campgrounds fill up fast—especially for popular races. Charlotte Motor Speedway offers options from the rowdy infield to the quieter Camping World Racing Resort. No matter your style, book early to lock in your ideal spot and avoid last-minute stress. This applies to tracks across the country.

Pro Tip: Early bookings often mean less traffic and better arrival/departure windows. Some tracks even offer early-bird discounts!

  2. Pick the Right Camping Spot for Your Style

Do you want nonstop action in the infield or a more laid-back campground? We stayed at the Camping World Racing Resort—close to the track, yet peaceful with full hookups. It was the best of both worlds: all-day excitement, followed by a quiet evening.

Pro Tip: Walk around your campground once you settle in. We got some of our best tips—and made new friends—just by chatting with fellow campers.

  3. Prepare for All Types of Weather

Race weekends can bring anything from blazing sun to chilly nights. At the Roval, we enjoyed sunny days but were glad we packed extra blankets for cooler evenings. A campfire with friends made it all the better.

Pro Tip: Bring a portable fan or space heater, plus rain gear, sunscreen, and extra layers. It’s always better to be over-prepared.

  4. Pack Smart and Get Your RV Race-Ready

Your RV is your home base. We stocked ours with essentials—coolers, camping chairs, and plenty of snacks. One highlight? Speedway Motorsports and THOR Industries had mobile RV techs on-site. A tech came right to our site and fixed our slide (free of charge thanks to THOR’s promotion). Rumor has it this service may expand to other Speedway tracks in 2025!

Pro Tip: Bring extra-long sewer and water hoses—hookups don’t always align perfectly. And keep basic tools handy for minor fixes.

  1. Arrive Early and Leave Late

Traffic on race weekends can be intense. We rolled in on Thursday and stayed until Monday. That gave us time to relax, explore, and avoid the biggest traffic jams.

Pro Tip: Arriving early means you can enjoy pre-race events and get into the racing spirit before the main event kicks off.

  2. Participate in Fan Activities

Our pre-race drive with Bobby Labonte was unforgettable! We also rocked out at live concerts and I even took on a mechanical bull (with no injuries, thankfully). NASCAR events are full of extras—take advantage of them.

Pro Tip: Check the event schedule for autograph sessions, concerts, and meet-and-greets. These moments make the weekend even more memorable.

  1. Embrace the Social Scene

The NASCAR community is incredibly welcoming. We made new friends just hanging out by the campfire, sharing stories, and trading favorite driver tales.

Pro Tip: Fly a flag for your favorite driver—it’s an instant conversation starter and makes it easy for friends to find your site.

  2. Stay Comfortable and Self-Sufficient

If you’re in a spot without full hookups, self-sufficiency is key. Arrive with full water tanks and empty waste tanks. Solar panels, generators, and a portable grill made our setup even better.

Pro Tip: Monitor tank levels and bring a portable waste tank if needed—you’ll avoid having to break camp to dump.

  3. Follow the Rules and Stay Safe

Campground rules keep things fun for everyone. At Charlotte, quiet hours started at midnight—plenty of time to enjoy the night without bothering neighbors. We also made sure to secure valuables when away from the RV.

Pro Tip: Know the rules before you go. It helps avoid surprises and ensures a smooth, stress-free weekend.

  4. Savor Every Moment

From the roar of the engines to hanging out with fellow fans, our Roval weekend was unforgettable. Racing, new friendships, and even a ride around the track with Bobby Labonte—it’s a bucket-list adventure.

Pro Tip: Bring earplugs for the race and stay through the final laps. You never know what last-minute excitement NASCAR has in store.

Class C Motorhomes

Class C motorhomes offer outdoor experiences for larger families at a lower price point than Class A Motorcoaches. Recognizable by their raised sleeping or storage areas which extend over the cab of the RV, Class C Motorhomes offer more living space than Class B Motorhomes but are smaller in size and can offer better gas mileage than Class A Motorcoaches.
