Getting Anyone to Go Camping
You live for s’mores. Your internal compass beats the GPS voice. Your inherent campfire-ability would make a Boy Scout jealous. Bugs hate you. You were born to camp. Others were born for room service. However, with the right planning and prep you can get almost anyone to dip their toe in the great outdoors. How?
START WITH THE FEARS
Many people have never camped or even been in the woods at night. We’re a climate-controlled culture with TV & movies showing scary crazy hard things in the woods. Common fears include:
- Insects & other crawlies
- Fear of bears and wildlife
- No showers
- Outhouses and/or leaves as toilet paper
- Sleeping on the ground
- Camp cooking or lack thereof
- Weather – will it rain? gust? freeze? heatwave?
- Being disconnected from the world
Try to convince them or leap right over them. An RV addresses all these fears. You can still be outside all day, around the fire under the stars, then sleep in a bed behind a locked door.
A simple popup requires little setup or hookup. It can be towed with a regular car and feel like a tent—or even better—with open air sides. Go simple and tent-like, or upgrade the popup and go glamping.
GIVE THEM THE TRIP THEY WANT
She loves mountain biking? Park next to killer trails. Or swimming holes. Or surfing spots. Or whatever their passion or interest may be. He’d go but doesn’t want to miss the game? An RV will let you hook up to DirectTV or stream on a screen, including an outdoor TV screen. They must stay gluten-free, sugar-free and fully smoothied? Accommodate, research recipes and shortcuts, then plan menus before you leave (a good idea no matter what).
LEVERAGE FEED ENVY
Instant Wanderlust: Tag your friend on great pics on the feed of the outdoorsy influencer type, cool camping brand or photographer. Don’t forget cute animal pics, cozy cuddles, breathtaking sunsets and scenery, and only-on-the-road moments.
PREPARE FOR SUCCESS
The first time is really about preparing them for the next time. Make it memorable. Plan an amazing side trip before you leave and talk it up. Have a pre-planning dreaming sesh where you bring their favorite treats or wine, and start imagining the great conversations, new experiences and amazing stories you’ll come home with.
Outdoor gear and clothes are cooler than ever. Get your friend excited about cool gadgets, awesome clothes and an excuse to buy fabrics.
REMIND THEM ROVER CAN COME, TOO
That’s one thing that rarely happens in Vegas! Plus if safety by night or animals are a concern, dogs are security and hiking buddies in one. Their dog friend will be in heaven and the dog mom or dad will never say no again!
